American travelers’ reported average annual leisure travel spend hits $4,826, one of the highest on record. Streaming services are now consistently ranked in the top 6 travel inspiration resources, interestingly while U.S. travelers prefer an ad-free Netflix experience, they don’t necessarily demand the same for Prime or Hulu. In fact, 20% of American travelers say they are likely to take a trip to experience next month’s total eclipse. Additionally, on the business travel front, more than one-in-five business convention travelers expect their company’s business travel volume to increase over the next 12 months. Every quarter as part of our ongoing The State of the American Traveler study, we take a deeper dive into topics and trends of critical importance to the travel, tourism and hospitality industry, in collaboration with our friends at Miles Partnership. For our Fall 2022 Segments Edition, we looked at trending traveler profiles from The State of the American Traveler’s extensive database—including Adventurers, Wellness-Seekers, Gen Z, Visiting Friends & Relatives, and Luxury-oriented travelers. Travel volume remains healthy and Americans’ excitement for travel is strong. In both general media consumption and trip-planning behaviors, offline resources still play a role in a world of digital domination.
